Mayor Susan FennellProfile:

Susan Fennell has been a member of Brampton Council since 1988 and is a dedicated volunteer and advocate for the arts, heritage and sports in her community. Elected Mayor in 2000, Susan quickly established herself as a ‘peoples politician’ through her open style of communication with her constituents.

Susan is known for her enthusiasm, energy and unmatched ability to engage and encourage community participation in the process of shaping and developing Brampton; Canada’s 10th largest city.

During her tenure as Mayor, the City of Brampton is now debt free and has become one of Canada’s preeminent municipalities.

Mayor Fennell is a member of the national Board of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), the FCM Big City Mayor’s Caucus and is currently in her second term as the Chair of the FCM Infrastructure and Transportation Committee. Mayor Fennell is a member of the Peel Regional Police Services Board, the Large Urban Mayors Caucus of Ontario, the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance, and a number of other advisory boards and panels. In 2005 Mayor Fennell was made an honourary member of the William Osler Health Centre Board of Directors.

In addition, Susan was inducted into the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 in the Builder Category, as the Founder and Commissioner of the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL), a national association of elite calibre women’s hockey clubs from British Columbia to Quebec. That groundbreaking initiative created in 1998 by Susan, raised the level of competition to the highest heights for Women’s Hockey. The NWHL hosts the ‘Stanley Cup’ of women’s hockey each April in the City of Brampton.

Mayor Fennell is a graduate of the University of Toronto (Hon. B.Sc. in Environmental Science), and is an honorary member of the Kiwanis and Zonta Clubs of Brampton. Mayor Fennell was honoured for her volunteer community service by Rotary International with its highest award, the Paul Harris Fellowship, and is a recipient of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal. Susan and her husband John have raised two sons (Michael 23 and Joey 21) in Brampton.
